Principal’s Newsletter – February 2017

February 2017

Dear Families,

With the second semester well under way, we want to thank everyone for your continued support of our students, staff and school as we collectively strive to provide optimal opportunities for learning each and every day. The second marking period ends February 28, 2017 and Student Led Conferences will be held March 9, 2017.  Report cards will be distributed that week.  I am very excited to continue having students participate in student led conferences in March.  Student-led conferences embody the Chancellor’s vision for students to build their self-confidence and hold themselves accountable for improvement and also inform parents how to best support their child both inside and outside the classroom.  I’d like to reiterate some helpful information about student-led conferences:

  • A student-led conference is a conference with parents led by the student;
  • The role of the classroom teacher is to facilitate the process;
  • Students lead parents through a discussion of their work and established academic and  social goals;
  • The teacher will be facilitating several student-led conferences at one time;
  • The role of the parent is to listen.

This month our children will take the STAR Reading Assessment online in the school’s computer lab. Discuss your child’s reading level with him or her at the March conference and appropriate books he or she can be reading at home. This can also be discussed with your child’s teacher on Tuesday afternoons between 2:20pm and 3:00pm during parent engagement time. Remember, this Tuesday afternoon time is for you! Please feel free to make an appointment with your child’s teacher to discuss academics, social-emotional development and ways to help your child at home.

Mid-winter recess is February 20, 2017 – February 24, 2017. Consider spending your break watching fabulous family theatre shows, exploring cool museum exhibits or visit the local library. You might also enjoy seasonal sports in the city, like ice-skating and sledding, or take a day trip to a nearby skiing and snow tubing resort. Plus, lots of museums run special family programs over breaks, where kids can enjoy a wide variety of hands-on activities.

In closing, we want to thank you, our families, for your diligence in having your students at school on-time and well-prepared for learning each day. In addition, please continue to be mindful that our students’ academic day continues until dismissal each afternoon and it is very important that students are not picked up early.  We understand occasionally unavoidable appointments or emergencies occur.  However, early pick up causes valuable instruction to be missed, in addition to required assignments. As always, thank you for supporting the wonderful teaching and learning taking place here at P.S. 131Q!

Warmest Regards,

Veronica DePaolo
