Principal’s Newsletter – September 2016

Dear Families,

Greetings to all families of Public School 131! It is a pleasure to be with you for a second year now.  Your summer days are about to come to an end in the upcoming weeks and your fall days are about to begin.  Our goal moving forward is to promote a culture of excellence for all.  Let us begin this journey to success.

We are excited to announce that fourth and fifth grade will have a new literacy program this year.  The Wonders Literacy Program was a major success in kindergarten through third grade and now fourth and fifth grade will have the program.  The ELA program offers a wealth of research-based print and digital resources providing support for building strong literacy foundations, accessing complex texts, engaging in collaborative conversations, and writing text-based responses.

More great changes come for our fifth graders.  This year the fifth grade will be departmentalized.  This means the students will be switching classes and will have all fifth grade teachers during the day.  They will have a different teacher for reading, writing, math and social studies.  They will have one homeroom teacher who picks them up from morning line-up, takes attendance and prepares them for the day.  They will truly be middle school ready!  Fifth grade parents will receive more information at Meet the Teacher Night.

Please be sure to save the date for Meet the Teacher Night.  This night is very important for our collaboration with families and we hope to see everyone there.  It is scheduled for Thursday, September 22, 2016.  Sessions will begin at 4:30PM.  More detailed information will follow.

Each school year offers our students a chance to start anew.  Please be mindful of your child’s school schedule.  Children should not be picked up early from school unless an emergency situation arises.  Lastly, if your child’s pick-up procedure is changing for the day, please be sure to contact the school in the morning hours so all parties can be notified.

Please note, the main entrance is not used to enter the building during arrival after 7:50 am.  During warm weather days, the students line up in the school yard (K-2 entrance on 83rd Ave. and 3-5 entrance on 84th Ave) and on cold/inclement weather days, the auditorium door on 172nd Street will open for all students.

Another important safety procedure is during dismissal.  Kindergarten, first and second grade children who are not picked up by 2:20 PM will be taken to the auditorium.  You may enter the auditorium on 172nd Street.  You must pick up your child no later than 2:40 PM.  There is no supervision after this time for your child.  Third, fourth and fifth graders are dismissed to the sidewalk.  Please arrive on time to meet your child.  If a third, fourth or fifth grade child is not picked up in a timely manner, they must come back inside to the main office on their own accord to place a call to you.  Please instruct your child of this very important safety procedure.

Please be sure to visit the school website which can be accessed directly through the website or visiting for important information throughout the year.

I look forward to another safe and productive year.

Warmest Regards,

Veronica DePaolo, Principal
