Principal’s Newsletter – April 2016

April 2016

Dear Families,

It seems cliché to say that this school year has absolutely flown by. However, it is now April and we only have three months left of the 2015/2016 school year. Even though only a short time is left, we have multiple opportunities for involvement and participation coming up in April, May and June.

Beginning Tuesday, April 5th, all students 3rd -5th grade will begin taking the NYS English Language Arts Exam.  The testing days are April 5th, 6th and 7th.  The NYS Mathematics exam will begin Wednesday, April 13th.  The days for the math exam are April 13th, 14th and 15th.   Please make sure your child is on time to school those days, has plenty of rest at night, and eats a healthy breakfast. All of our students and teachers have worked diligently to prepare your child for this test. We want our students to “show what they know” on those days. Please encourage your child to do their very best. Please note, this year the test is untimed.  The students will have as much “productive working time” as needed.

In the upcoming months we welcome every parent, caregiver, and/or relative to sign up to be a guest reader in your child’s classroom.  This is a very exciting initiative the Parent Involvement Committee has started this year.  We want the school and classrooms to be an open door for our P.S. 131 families.  Mrs. Aviva Carmeli will be showcasing several art pieces during an art presentation.  Keep your ears open for this exciting event.  Also, our fourth and fifth grade chorus has been hard at work after school preparing for our spring concert.  We will have an assembly towards the end of the school year to celebrate their hard work.  We welcome all families to this event.  These are just a few of the exciting things on tap for the remaining months of the year. Please come out and get involved with us. Learning does not end just because we finish our state tests. We will continue to involve your child in deep, rich learning experiences that will carry them into middle school and beyond.

The Character Education Committee raised $80 in Box Tops for Education! The use of the money raised will be voted on by students in November 2016 to promote their current events knowledge of the election process.  We are hoping to have a spring box tops collection to add on to this total amount raised for our Election Day vote next school year.

Lastly, the lost and found items will be donated on Friday, April 22nd.  Our lost and found items are overflowing. Our school will be open late on Wednesday night, April 20th for the PTA/Student of the Month Meeting so it is a great time to come take a look at our lost and found items.

Warmest Regards,

Veronica DePaolo
