Principal’s Newsletter – February 2016

February 2016

Dear Families,

With the second semester well under way, we want to thank everyone for your continued support of our students, teachers, and school as we collectively strive to provide optimal opportunities for learning each and every day. The second marking period ends February 26th and Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held March 3rd. Report cards will be distributed on March 2nd. We encourage all students to participate in the March conferences by having them lead the conversations. They can do this by discussing their strengths, weaknesses and upcoming academic goals alongside yourselves and the teachers.

Last month your children took the STAR Reading Assessment online in the school’s computer lab. Discuss your child’s reading level at the March conference and appropriate books he or she can be reading at home. This can also be discussed on Tuesday afternoons between 2:20pm and 3:00pm during parent engagement time. Remember, this Tuesday afternoon time is for you! Please feel free to make an appointment with your child’s teacher to discuss academics, social-emotional development and ways to help your child at home. Over the next few weeks your child should be receiving a password to log onto RAZ-Kids.  RAZ-Kids is an online library where kids can read books anywhere, anytime!

Respect For All Week in NYC is February 9th through the 12th.  We will be having two assemblies to celebrate the importance of this week.  The students will see The NED Show.  This show will spread the message of “Never Give Up, Encourage Others and Do Your Best.”  The students will also get to see a dance company perform an African Dance Celebration.

February has a new school closing. On February 8, 2016 schools will be closed to celebrate Lunar New Year. Mid-winter recess is February 15, 2016 – February 19, 2016. Consider spending your break watching fabulous family theatre shows, exploring cool museum exhibits or celebrating the Lunar New Year. You might also enjoy seasonal sports in the city, like ice-skating and sledding, or take a day trip to a nearby skiing and snow tubing resort. Plus lots of museums run special family programs over breaks, where kids can enjoy a wide variety of hands-on activities.

In closing, we want to thank our families for your diligence in having your students at school on-time and well-prepared for learning each day. In addition, please continue to be mindful that our students’ academic day continues until dismissal each afternoon and it is very important that students are not dismissed early.  We understand occasionally unavoidable appointments or emergencies occur.  However, early dismissal causes valuable instruction to be missed, in addition to required assignments. As always, thank you for supporting the wonderful teaching and learning taking place here at P.S. 131Q!

Warmest Regards,

Veronica DePaolo

Principal, IA
